Wikimedia Foundation העומדת מאחורי ויקיפדיה העולמית גייסה תרומות בביטקוין בסכום נכבד תוך שבוע לאחר שהכריזה על אפשרות זו.
Wikimedia Foundation הודיעה,
שבוע לאחר מתן אפשרות לתרומות בביטקוין, על גיוס תרומות בסך של 237
ביטקוין ושחברה עם
Coinbase ב-30.7.14 כדי לעבד את התרומות.
זו התפתחות הנותנת תוקף לפוטנציאל ההשפעה של הביטקוין על תרומות לארגונים ללא מטרת רווח.
